‘100%’ - Malaga give update on expected Newcastle United signing dubbed a 'snake' by local media

Under-fire Malaga boss Sergio Pellicer has insisted Newcastle United target Antonio Cordero is fully committed to the club.

That is despite intense speculation regarding the 18-year-old’s future. NewcastleWorld understands the Magpies have agreed a deal to sign Cordero on a free transfer this summer.

A talented under-19 Spanish international, his arrival would be the latest in a line of youth talent to join Newcastle under Saudi-backed ownership. United have prioritised signing prospects to help comply with PSR regulations.

While the focus is nurturing prospects for the first team, flipping youngsters for a profit can be fruitful for the balance sheet. An example of this is Yankuba Minteh, the winger who did not kick a ball for Newcastle but was sold to Brighton a year later - banking £26million profit.

Cordero is highly rated and has enjoyed a breakout campaign at Liga 2 club Malaga. An impressive 33 appearances across all competitions despite his tender age has returned 11 goal contributions.

Real Madrid were reportedly interested but Cordero is set to join Eddie Howe’s project at St James’ Park. Spanish media have reacted furiously, with local outlet Diario Sur labelling him a “snake” for joining the Magpies.

Malaga have taken him out of the firing line by benching him in recent weeks but that has worsened the situation. Three consecutive defeats has placed manager Pellicer under pressure with three games of the campaign remaining.

Speaking to Radia Marca Malaga, the 51-year-old revealed he has spoken to Cordero and the player is “100 per cent” committed. Pellicer said: "I'm not going to talk about the individual. It's a collective moment. I see that everyone wants and trains as we ask.

“I see the whole group committed. I've spoken to him and he's 100 per cent (committed). Everything else is beyond me. Some of them don't know it, but they're going to score a very important goal this season."

Pellicer also answered questions on his own situation following a recent downturn in form. He vowed to “give his best” despite the difficult circumstances, with Malaga - a Champions League club 12 years ago - not playing in the top flight since 2018.

“I have to understand it,” Pellicer added. “It's the week I've been able to train most calmly. It's been a week of passion. Professionally, it's been the most peaceful week, for me and the lads. Working alone to work. We all suffer. I'm ready for anything. I suffer for the people who love me.

“I'm privileged - I'm at the best club in the world and this is a dream. When I'm gone, I'll recognise everyone. Fans, players, people from the club, the press… What this club has given me is everything. My brother isn't here, and he told me he'd always be a Malaga fan. Here, the result counts. With honesty and purity, I give my best.”
