The summer transfer window is open for business and it is expected to be a busy period for Newcastle United.
The Magpies’ hierarchy are keen to build on the momentum gained during an impressive performance during the second half of the Premier league season and add further quality to Eddie Howe’s squad.
Moves for the likes of Lille’s highly-rated Dutch defender Sven Botman and Reims forward Hugo Ekitike are work-in-progress as United look to add to last week’s permanent signing of Aston Villa defender Matt Targett.
There have been numerous eye-catching names linked with a move to Tyneside as the Magpies look to replicate the success of the January transfer window.
But the recent history of the club also suggests that caution is required after previous managers and owners played a part in squandering millions of pounds of signings that failed to make an impact during their time at St James Park.

5. Emmanuel Riviere - £7m from Monaco
A good season at AS Monaco alongside Radamel Falcao convinced Newcastle to spend £6million on the striker. However, in two years at the club, Riviere netted just one league goal, which he managed to kick in off his own shin, before he was moved on-loan to Osasuna in Spain. Spells in France and Italy followed before he was released by FC Crotone in August 2021. Photo: Stu Forster
6. Andreas Andersson - £3m from AC Milan
Andersson had a big reputation when he joined Newcastle from AC Milan in January 1998. However, he lasted just 18 months in England before returning to his native Sweden. Remarkably, he still managed to score at Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge during his time as a Magpie.

7. Silvio Maric - £3.65m from Croatia Zagreb
Felt like this should have been a very good signing, but in reality, the Croatian international never really settled into life in the Premier League and could not find a regular place in the United side. Photo: Ben Radford
8. Marcelino - £6m from Mallorca
The Spaniard arrived at Newcastle for £6m in June 1999 and departed in January 2003. He made just 22 first-team appearances in that time however with his last coming in November 2001 against Charlton Athletic. Photo: Stu Forster
