The summer transfer window is open for business and it is expected to be a busy period for Newcastle United.
The Magpies’ hierarchy are keen to build on the momentum gained during an impressive performance during the second half of the Premier league season and add further quality to Eddie Howe’s squad.
Moves for the likes of Lille’s highly-rated Dutch defender Sven Botman and Reims forward Hugo Ekitike are work-in-progress as United look to add to last week’s permanent signing of Aston Villa defender Matt Targett.
There have been numerous eye-catching names linked with a move to Tyneside as the Magpies look to replicate the success of the January transfer window.
But the recent history of the club also suggests that caution is required after previous managers and owners played a part in squandering millions of pounds of signings that failed to make an impact during their time at St James Park.
NewcastleWorld takes a look back at 15 signings that failed to deliver over the last three decades.

9. Jean-Alain Boumsong - £8m from Rangers
United missed out on the free transfer signing of the Frenchman when he signed for Rangers in the summer of 2004 - but inexplicably handed over £8m for the defender just months later. Had some decent games but had just as many shockers as he struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
10. Albert Luque
Luque joined Newcastle after impressing against them for Deportivo La Coruna but his time at the club will possibly only be remembered for a goal against Sunderland. Spells at Ajax and Malaga followed for Luque before his retirement in 2011. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) Photo: Stu Forster
11. Xisco - £5.7m from Deportivo la Coruna
One of the key factors in Kevin Keegan bringing an end to his second managerial reign, little was known of Xisco when he signed, and it’s probably fair to say little was known of him when he left the club too. Scored on his debut against Hull City, set up Andy Carroll’s hat-trick goal against Aston Villa and that was pretty much it. Photo: GRAHAM STUART
12. Henri Saivet - £5m from Bordeaux
Saivet joined Newcastle in January 2016. He played just eight times before being released in summer 2021 and has yet to find a new club. His goal direct from a free-kick against West Ham United was the highlight of a forgettable five years on Tyneside. Photo: Steve Bardens
