Former Newcastle United talisman Papiss Cisse is training with non-league side Macclesfield FC at the age of 38 years old after being released by French Ligue 2 side Amiens this summer - and replaced by none other than giant Geordie Andy Carroll.

Despite being let go by the club, Cisse still bagged 10 goals in 30 league appearances last season, proving that he still has his magic touch. The Senegal star left Tyneside in 2016 and went on to spend two years in China before bouncing around Turkish clubs between 2016 and 2022.

Cisse is keeping his game ticking over at non-league side Macclesfield, who play in the Northern Premier League. The club is a phoenix club of former Football League team Macclesfield Town after they were liquidated in 2020.

The Telegraph reports that Cisse is living in the North West and is determined to find another club despite nearing 40. Cisse scored 44 times for the Magpies during his four-and-a-half years at St James' Park, including some stunning goals that will remain forever etched in Magpies folklore.

Speaking about his time on Tyneside to Behind The White Lines, Cisse admitted he felt adopted by the region and remains a fan of the football club. He said: "I still love this team, because when I arrived, the fans, the club – it was amazing. The people helped me in every way

"You could see it in my first six months, because I felt very good, and you could see it in how I was playing. In the dressing room, the fans inside the stadium, how they helped me to score 13 goals in 14 games. I always want to say thank you to the Newcastle fans, to the Geordie people!

"Newcastle's my team. I’d never supported a team all my life, but when I arrived at Newcastle, I have them in my heart. I have the black and white in my heart."

Amiens are currently 10th in the Ligue 2 table and replaced Cisse's goals by bringing in fellow former Magpie Andy Carroll from Reading, following the Berkshire club's relegation into League One. The former Liverpool and West Ham man has two goals in 10 Ligue 2 appearances this term.
