Newcastle United’s injury list is growing ahead of a busy fixture list.

Newcastle United have a new triple injury concern following Wednesday night’s Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund at St James’ Park.

The Magpies’ 1-0 loss to the Bundesliga outfit - decided by Felix Nmecha’s 45th-minute strike - was compounded by injuries to Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy.

Isak returned to the starting XI in place of Callum Wilson but pulled up just 14 minutes in with a thigh issue. And Murphy was only on the field for five minutes having been introduced as a substitute before sustaining what looks like a dislocated shoulder.

Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe revealed: “It’s difficult to tell, very early days. Alex has suffered a recurrence of his groin injury that he had during international duty. And Jacob, it looks like a potential dislocated shoulder. Probably on the eye more worried about Jacob.

“I’m absolutely devastated for him [Murphy[. We’ll wait and see how bad it is but he’s been such a big player for us playing in different positions. Great personality so we’ll miss him.”

Speaking after the game, Howe also confirmed Elliot Anderson is set for a few weeks out because of a back injury as the absentee list begins to mount ahead of a busy few weeks - starting with Saturday evening’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Howe’s side then travel to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, followed by Arsenal & Bournemouth in the Premier League and the Champions League visit to Dortmund.

“It’s a strange one because when you look at some of the injuries... Murph’s shoulder tonight and Elliot’s back, they’re quite difficult injuries to get your head around but they happened,” Howe added. “We have to adjust, that’s all we can do. We can’t sit here and analyse too much.

“At this moment it’s ‘right, get on with it, and regroup’. Massive game at Wolves ahead. We’re still in a very good position in the Champions League and Premier League. Every player in the squad is vitally important and we need to pull together in this moment.”

As well as the aforementioned players, Newcastle are also without Harvey Barnes (foot), Sven Botman (knee) and Lewis Miley (glandular fever), although were boosted by the return of Joe Willock versus Dortmund.
