Erik ten Hag named Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in his three-man attack, and it was that area in particular that attracted the most criticism from Shearer.
"They [Newcastle] absolutely battered Man United in wide areas," Shearer said on Match of the Day. "[Kieran] Trippier and [Tino] Livramento were sensational against [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka and [Diogo] Dalot.

"Rashford didn't look at it at all - didn't look interested. It happened so many times. Newcastle created so many chances and they should have had many goals.
"For me, there are too many bad eggs in that Man United team. Too many bad attitudes.

"When it's not going for you, when you're a bit tired and you've got to roll your sleeves up, there's not enough characters in that team."
Rashford and Martial were hooked off on the hour-mark in place of Rasmus Hojlund and Antony, which brought some jeers from the travelling Man United fans.

"I will talk to him and not the media," the Dutchman said. "I don't go into individual performances. I knew this issue was coming up and Marcus is investing a lot. He will return to his form, he will recover and he gets all our support."
Rashford hit 30 goals last season but has netted just two so far this campaign. In comparison, Anthony Gordon, a player fighting for a spot in the England squad, has seven goals.
