Newcastle United have failed four times to land Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has called on the Premier League to shut the transfer window early amid Newcastle United’s pursuit of Marc Guehi.

Clubs voted to close the summer window once the season kicked off for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns. Many - including former Toon boss Alan Pardew - had advocated for the change to stop unsettling players early into the season.

However, once top-flight clubs noted the tweak handed European rivals an advantage, they soon reverted to the original system. Premier League clubs now follow the traditional approach of having until August 31 to complete their transfer dealings.

Fortunately for Newcastle, they need the extra 13 days to complete their business. The Magpies have been quiet in the market as they battle a tight FFP/PSR situation.

Toon chiefs tabled four bids for Palace defender Guehi, who captains the side against Brentford today. Before the clash, Eagles manager Glasner urged the Premier League to reconsider the transfer deadline.

“It was easy (to select Guehi) because Marc is such a professional player,” he said in his pre-match interview on Sky Sports. “We are talking every day. There are many rumours around but that is not just with our players - there are many rumours around the world in football.

“I would appreciate that the transfer window closes with the first game played but it is what it is. It looks like Marc is not influenced by all the rumours, he has trained well. He is captain of the team and I am pretty sure he will put in a great performance.”
