Eddie Howe illness: Will the Newcastle United boss return to the dugout vs Crystal Palace?

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe missed the 4-1 win over Manchester United through illness.

Jason Tindall has delivered an update on Eddie Howe following Newcastle United’s 4-1 win over Manchester United.

Howe was absent from St James’ Park after being admitted into hospital on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days. He managed to watch the game and sent Tindall a congratulations message at full-time.

Sandro Tonali opened the scoring before Alejandro Garanacho levelled against the run of play. But Newcastle put the Red Devils to the sword in the second-half via a Harvey Barnes brace and a goal from captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Eddie Howe illness: Jason Tindall provides update

“Yes, I had a message from him just before I came to the press congratulating the team and the performance and the work from everybody,” Tindal told reporters at his post-match press conference. “He was able to watch the game and I'm sure that performance was appreciated.

“He was hugely missed, certainly for me. It's only the second time in 70 years that we've met side by side. You miss your leader when he's not there. But testament and credit to everybody else to be able to step into the big shoes to fill. He's one of the best managers around and credit to everybody to be able to go out and deliver a performance. As I said, I'm sure he'll be proud of that.”

Tindall stood in for Howe at his pre-match press conference on Friday and was under the impression Howe would be on the touchline against Man United. But Howe’s condition worsened in the evening.

“Probably Saturday morning,” Tindall said when asked when he found out he’d be leaving the team. “Obviously got taken into hospital on Friday evening. From that moment on it was very unlikely that he would be here to meet the team today.

“He put his trust in myself and the rest of the group to go out there and make the right calls to hopefully deliver the performance that we did today. Thankfully we did that and I'm sure he'll be super proud of it. All the players have said very positive things and wishes.”

Eddie Howe illness: Will he return to the dugout against Crystal Palace?

Newcastle are back in action on Wednesday night when they host Crystal Palace. A win will see them move up to third in the Premier League. However, it is still unclear whether Howe will return.

Tindall said: “I'm not sure as yet. We've not spoken on the phone for a few days now. Obviously, I was delighted to receive the message after the game and was able to watch the game.

“Hopefully, the result of the performance will put a smile on his face and give him an experience. The quicker the manager is back the better.”

“I've obviously not really had the opportunity to speak to him properly. He just received a text message before I came to do the media so I'm sure as soon as there's any update then you guys will probably be the first to know.”
