Eddie Howe admits he will speak to Joelinton after the Newcastle United midfielder escaped a possible red card in the 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth.

Marcus Tavernier handed the hosts the lead in the first-half before the Magpies equalised in the 76th minute when Anthony Gordon got on the end of Harvey Barnes’ cross to the back post.

The game then threatened to boil over in stoppage time after Dango Ouattara saw what he thought was a winning goal ruled out for handball.

It left Bournemouth miffed, a feeling that only grew moments later when Joelinton was shown a yellow card for wrapping his arm around goalkeeper Neto’s neck to prevent him from quickly launching the ball forward.

A member of Andoni Iraola’s backroom being shown a red card for his protest. Howe too seemed slightly unimpressed by Joelinton’s action as he ran the risk of serving a three-match ban.

Howe admitted: "It was probably as bit reckless from Joelinton. You could see what he is trying to do - he's trying to stop the keeper - but you can't go near the head area. That's something we will talk to him about."

Meanwhile, Iraola expressed his disappointed at the decision to disallow Ouattara’s goal with replays showing the ball hit the top of his arm.

“It was so obvious,” said the Spaniard. “I think everyone who watches the game would agree. “I have just seen the video and the fact is it doesn’t touch the arm, it is the shoulder, a clear goal and three points for us. ... It goes against the concept they are telling us. It is not even controversial, I think everyone will agree. I do not know what else to say.”
