Newcastle United were drawn in the 'group of death' on their return to the Champions League, but at least it's nowhere near as expensive as other English club draws.

Newcastle United supporters have had one of the most expensive Champions League draws when it comes to the cost of away day travel.

An eye-watering 20,000 Geordies are believed to have made their way to Dortmund this week to follow the Magpies in their latest European quest, despite only 4,000 away tickets being available at the Signal Iduna Park. Those tens of thousands of Newcastle United fans will now be making their way back to Tyneside by car, plane, coach, boat or train before getting the passport out again for a visit to Paris later this month.

Having waited more than 20 years to return to the Champions League, few will be complaining too much about the cost of the away days, which will be the highlight of the year for many. However, it's worth noting that the commitment of away supporters has come at a considerable price.

Money experts Sambla researched the average cost of direct flights to and from each Champions League team's opponents to compile a table of supporters having to fork out the most on the unforgettable nights under the lights.

Newcastle United fans are used to long and expensive trips, being one of the Premier League's most geographically isolated clubs, and followers are the 10th worst off of all 32 sides when it comes to money spent.

Eddie Howe's side were drawn in the 'group of death' Group F with Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan earlier this year and direct flights to those three destinations add up to £745. The total amount spent on tickets, accommodation, food and drink will of course greatly surpass that.

Manchester United are the worst-hit club in the whole competition with fans paying £1,162 on average for flights, more than any other team in the competition. Manchester City are seventh overall at £818 with Arsenal gifted one of the cheapest draws at £413 for travel, coming in at 30th.

Manchester United are competing with Galatasaray, FC Copenhagen and Bayern Munich in Group A, which is the most expensive group to have fallen into. Researchers credit that to a number of factors, especially Galatasaray's Istanbul location making it one of the clubs the furthest away.

Group C, featuring Real Madrid, Braga, Napoli and Union Berlin is the cheapest with all the sides located in either central, southern or western Europe.
