Newcastle United's complete focus is set on continuing their push for a top four place in the Premier League table and progressing in a number of cup competitions.
As it stands, the Magpies are still able to successfully navigate their way through a Champions League group containing Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund and Eddie Howe's men can claim a place in the last four of the Carabao Cup with a quarter-final win at Chelsea later this month. January will also see the Magpies kick off their FA Cup campaign as they look to win the greatest domestic club competition in world football for the first time since 1955.
For all of the on-field action, there are ongoing talks behind the scenes at the United hierarchy plan for the January transfer window. Speculation is ramping up over which players could be targeted in the new year as a number of weird and wonderful names are linked with a move to St James Park.
With the window now under a month away, NewcastleWorld takes a look at the latest speculation and assesses which players are realistic targets and who should be completely ruled out.
1. COULD SIGN: Sehrou Guirassy (VfB Stuttgart)
The in-form and in-demand Guinea international has plundered his way to 17 goals in just 12 appearances this season and a reported £15m release clause in his deal could make him an attractive option as United look to strengthen at the top end of the pitch.
2. WON'T SIGN: Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea - currently on loan at Roma)
Where to start on this one? Although Chelsea may accept a lower fee for the Belgian star, his wage demands and profile mean it's highly unlikely Lukaku will move to Tyneside. Photo: Getty
3. COULD SIGN: Ruben Neves (Al-Hilal)
The Portugal international has his admirers within the Magpies hierarchy and was under consideration for a move to St James Park during his time at Wolves.
4. WON'T SIGN: Scott McTominay (Manchester United)
Heavily linked with a move to Newcastle in recent years, McTominay's growing importance at Manchester United means the Scotland midfielder will likely remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
