Former England star stunned by Allan Saint-Maximin’s outrageous strike that earned Newcastle United a draw at Wolves

The Frenchman hit the headlines on Super Sunday for a second consecutive week.

Jamie Redknapp has hailed Allan Saint-Maximin’s wonder strike that earned Newcastle United a point at Wolverhampton Wanderers as a ‘wow moment’.

The Magpies looked to be on their way to their first defeat of the season when Portugal International Ruben Neves fired the hosts ahead with a stunning low drive seven minutes before half-time.

Newcastle stayed in the game but had to survive a scare when Wolves were denied a second goal inside the final ten minutes of the game.

Raul Jimenez looked to have settled the contest when he converted a cross from close range but a VAR review was recommended after Ryan Fraser had been fouled earlier in the attack.

Eddie Howe’s side made the most of that let-off as Saint-Maximin beat Wolves keeper Jose Sa with a brilliant volley from the edge of the area after a looping clearance from Hwang Hee-Chan had fallen his way.

That was enough to earn a point for Newcastle and ensure they remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Redknapp described Saint-Maximin’s goal as ‘as incredible strike’ and praised the technique shown by the mercurial French forward.

“This was just one of those Premier League wow moments,” said the former England midfielder.

“It really is an incredible, incredible strike.  We spoke before the game about what we want from him and we want more end product.

“When you see a player do a volley like this, a side volley, one thing you have to do is drop that left shoulder when it comes to you, you can you, he drops that shoulder, bang, he hits it so well.

“An incredible, incredible strike, it really was.”

Saint-Maximin hobbled out of the game in injury-time and could be a doubt for Wednesday night’s visit to Liverpool.
