Newcastle United duo Joelinton and Fabian Schar will undergo scans on Monday after picking up injuries during the 3-0 win against Fulham.

The Magpies pair were forced off in the first-half at St James' Park. Schar pulled up with a glute issue 13 minutes before Joelinton signalled to come off after clutching his hamstring.

Asked about Joelinton and Schar ahead of Tuesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final clash away to Chelsea, United boss Eddie Howe said: “Both players are having scans today so we’ll know more. They don’t appear to be too bad but I’m reluctant to say that before we get the results."

While both are players are a doubt for the trip to Stamford Bridge, Newcastle are set to welcome back Kieran Trippier after he served a one-match suspension against the Cottagers.

Trippier had been nursing a couple of knocks but a weekend off should aid the England man.

“As we sit here now, yes [he is available]," said Howe. "But we have another training session.

"It’ll be good to sit down and speak with Kieran and see how he’s feeling. But certainly it’s a big boost to have him back."

And Howe is also toying with the idea of starting Sven Botman. The Dutch defender made his return from a three-month knee injury as an 86th-minute substitute on Saturday.

“Sven’s done a lot work, he’s rehabbed really well," said Howe. "We’ll have to make a decision on whether we want to start him in this game. I certainly think from a physical perspective he’s got the load behind him.

"I’ve been really impressed with how he attacked that and looked good when he came on so that was a great thing from the day really.”
