The AC Milan star is surprised to see Sandro Tonali leave his boyhood club to join Newcastle United.

AC Milan star Rafael Leao has revealed his surprise at Sandro Tonali’s move to Newcastle United.

The Magpies officially confirmed Tonali as a Newcastle player on Monday afternoon for an undisclosed fee - believed to be £52million plus add-ons. The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on an initial five-year contract with an option of a sixth year.

Tonali spent three seasons at his boyhood team Milan, where he helped the club win their first Scudetto in 11 years as well as reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2007 last season.

“He is an important player for us, I didn’t expect him to leave,” Leao told his YouTube channel. “He made the difference in midfield. I saw him as Gattuso’s heir because he’s been a Milan fan since he was a child. He was someone I would see at Milan for many years.”

Speaking before Italy’s group stage exit at the under-21s European Championships, Leao continued: “We have a good relationship, I wish him good luck for the U21 Euros and much success in his new adventure.”

NewcastleWorld understands Tonali will fly to Tyneside for the first time on Wednesday to pose for pictures in a black and white shirt at St James’ Park and the club’s Benton training ground.

His move to United has made his the most expensive Italian of all-time.

“First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career,” said Tonali.

“I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I’m really excited about playing at St. James’ Park, I can’t wait to feel the warmth of the fans.”

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe added: “I’m delighted to welcome Sandro to Newcastle United. He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us.

“At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe’s top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.

“But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I’m excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead.”
