It’s a huge night for Newcastle United and fans as the Magpies take on Southampton in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at St. Mary’s tonight - and it’s set to have consequences for the Great North Run 2023 too.

Over the next week, Eddie Howe’s side will face the Saints on the south coast and then at home at St. James’ Park with the chance to secure a place at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final.

All eyes will be on the side with the chance to move one step closer to Newcastle’s first major trophy since 1955 on the line, but any keen runners in the region may have an added interest.

The Great North Run has today confirmed that it is giving away one free entry for the iconic Tyneside half marathon in September for every goal scored against Southampton in tonight’s match.

Sir Brendan Foster, founder of the Great North Run, is a Newcastle United fan and has spoken about the scheme as he gets excited about the cup semi-final.

He said: “Cup semi-finals and dare we say it, finals, have been quite rare in the North East.

“I’ve been a die-hard Magpies fan all my life, so like most of the city I’m really looking forward to tonight’s match.” To celebrate, we’re giving away a free AJ Bell Great North Run entry for every goal scored by Newcastle. The more they score the more we’ll give away.

“Best of luck to Eddie and the team tonight. Howay the lads!”

To be in with a chance of winning the free place, hopeful participants will have to have their name in the ballot for the Great North Run by 8 pm tonight. Lucky winners, if Newcastle score of course, will then be picked from those who have applied.

Great North Run organisers have also confirmed that there will be another chance to get involved when the second leg is played at St. James’ Park next week on Tuesday, January 31.
