Newcastle United are reportedly ‘ready to compete’ with Manchester United for the signing of Roma forward Paulo Dybala.

The Argentina international was said to be a target for the Premier league clubs during the summer after he confirmed he would be ending his seven-year association with Juventus. Despite receiving offers from around Europe, Dybala remained in Italy as he joined Jose Mourinho’s Roma on a three-year contract.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a largely positive start to life working under the former Chelsea manager after scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists in his 22 appearances in all competitions. Only a hamstring injury suffered in early October has disrupted Dybala’s season but he now back to full fitness and is aiming to help Roma return to the Champions League.

However, speculation over his future in the Italian capital was fuelled by the revelation his current deal contains a surprisingly modest release clause believed to be worth around £10m. Dybala has opened up on what could lie ahead in a recent interview and gave his take on life under Mourinho.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Thursday night’s Europa Conference League defeat at RB Salzburg, he said: “I respect the clause, but it’s something between my agents at the club. I don’t know what will happen at the end of the season.

“I don’t know about my future; imagine the coach’s. I’d like to be coached by him [Mourinho] because he is one of the best, I want to win with him. Now, I only think about doing well tomorrow. I want to win with Roma and help the team qualify for the Champions League.”

Reports in Italy have suggested Newcastle and Manchester United are just two of the clubs monitoring the forward’s situation ahead of a potential summer move.
