Emil Krafth is focused on a successful Newcastle United campaign despite uncertainty over his future.

In each of the past two seasons, the Swede has been given a one-year extension. An injury crisis saw Krafth play his part in an end-of-season turnaround to more than justify a fresh deal.

The 30-year-old started eight of the final nine Premier League games as Newcastle rose to seventh - narrowly missing out on a European spot due to Manchester United’s cup win. Krafth now has 12 months to prove his worth and earn another Toon contract.

The versatile defender started all of Newcastle’s pre-season games aside from against Stade Brestois, which took place 24 hours after the Girona clash. With fitness issues from last year lingering, that gives a strong indication that Krafth could be used early into the campaign.

His form under Steve Bruce saw him become a forgotten man on Tyneside but Krafth has developed into a dependable squad player in recent years. That is despite suffering a serious knee injury just nine months into Eddie Howe's reign at Tranmere Rovers.

Speaking to The Athletic, Krafth insisted he “wants to stay” at St James’ Park - five years after arriving from French club Amiens for £5million. He said: “I’m still alive! Me and the lads can’t wait for next weekend and the season to start. I know what I’m capable of.

“Everyone here is a really good player and everyone wants to be a part of the team this season. I want to stay. I love being in Newcastle and being part of the team. I will work as hard as I can to make it happen.”
