Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson admitted that Leicester City star James Maddison deserves the opportunity at a 'bigger club' as the midfielder continues to be linked with the Magpies.

The Foxes rejected a £45 million bid from Newcastle last summer as they fought to keep their playmaker and a January move was squashed with Leicester grappling with relegation.

However, with Leicester reporting losses of £92 million last year, it is reported that Newcastle are keen to make Maddison their number one transfer target this summer.

The midfielder impressed for England against Ukraine this week and his contract at the King Power expires next year.

Speaking on the BBC Sounds' Footballer's Football Podcast, Wilson was cautious when talking about his international teammate's future but teased that a move to a club higher in the league seemed inevitable.

Wilson said: "If you're playing week in, week out in the Premier League and you're doing it there you do get in the limelight more which gives you the opportunity to get into the England squad.

"Regardless of where he's playing, if he's in form he should have the opportunity to play in the England squad. When I was at Bournemouth, one of the smallest clubs in the league at the time, I got my opportunity.

"He's a top player and eventually will move on from Leicester and go to a bigger club because he deserves that opportunity."

Wilson has history with Maddison having both risen through the Coventry City ranks before finding their own paths to the top flight.

Wilson added: "I'm happy for him, he's a fellow Coventry kid so to see him doing well on the big stage is nice.

"I hope he gets more opportunities. The question was always can he do it on the next level and now he has ticked that box so I'm sure a lot of big clubs will want to take a gamble on him."
