Joelinton return date revealed as Newcastle United seek midfield muscle after Leeds horror show

Joelinton has not played since suffering a quad injury in the 2-1 pre-season defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Joelinton remains on course for a Newcastle United return after the upcoming international break.

The Brazilian has not played since suffering a quad injury in the pre-season defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. Joelinton - linked with a summer move to the Saudi Pro League - is yet to make a competitive appearance under Matthias Jaissle.

Newcastle could have done with the 30-year-old’s physicality in the 4-1 defeat to Leeds United. A limp Toon outfit were outmuscled at Elland Road as they crashed to a first defeat of the season.

Joelinton return date

Joelinton is on schedule and should return to first-team training following the three-week break. According to the Daily Mail, the setback - his fourth muscle problem in 12 months - did not require surgery.

It remains to be seen where Joelinton will fit in Jaissle’s system. Eddie Howe famously converted him from a goal-shy striker to a bulldozing midfield powerhouse.

However, that was often on the left of a rigid midfield three. Jaissle plays with a double pivot and No.10 - or deep-lying forward - leaving Joelinton perhaps needing to refine his role again.

Matthias Jaissle on Joelinton

Ahead of the campaign, Jaissle told reporters that Joelinton would miss the “first weeks” while naming him as official vice-captain. He said: “Well, he will miss for sure the first weeks, but all details will be followed.

“We made the decision (on Friday) and we announced internally that Dan Burn is the captain representing the team and the club. Joelinton is the vice-captain.”
