Joelinton’s catchy new chant, cup final atmosphere and captain fantastic - Inside Newcastle United’s win over Burnley

Ladies and gentlemen, we have lift off!

A first three points. A first clean sheet - both at the same time!

That was a long time coming, not just this season but for 686 days as well - the last time United won in front of a packed St James’ Park.

Isaac Hayden’s late winner against Chelsea in February 2020 seemed like a lifetime ago, and so much has changed.

The biggest change? The ownership. And finally, the new custodians have a win to toast to. They deserve it as much as the supporters.

Amanda Staveley, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, Jamie Reuben and PIF have restored hope. Fans have responded, remaining positive despite fear of relegation.

Most importantly, Howe & Co are up-and-running. The belief is back.

It has taken the players until the 15th matchday to claim a first victory but incredibly, a look at the league table, and they’re only three points adrift.

Still, there’s a reason why no Premier League club to not win in their opening 14 matches has fallen into the Championship. The challenge remains huge.

But victories inspire confidence, and that is exactly what Newcastle needed heading into a difficult Christmas fixture list. Suddenly, everything feels better.

It’s daunting of course, but why can’t United build from the Burnley win and shock a few teams? The reality is they have to.

Losing to Burnley would have felt like the end of the world but instead there is a feeling that maybe, just maybe, Newcastle will defy the history books.

Full-time scenes - have Newcastle won a trophy?

You would have thought Newcastle had just lifted a trophy just by witnessing the full-time scenes.

Those on the terraces at St James’ Park kicked every ball in the closing stages before euphoria poured out at the end whistle.

Howe soaked up the “special” atmosphere during his and the team’s lap of honour. Just imagine if Newcastle DID win something?

That sums up the unique nature of the club. It’s one win, yet it’s got Tyneside beaming.

Although the owners united the club, Howe has also played a major part. For the first time in a long time, everyone is striving for the same thing. Together.

Captain fantastic Jamaal Lascelles

Now, that’s the Jamaal Lascelles fans have been missing as he rolled back the clock to his Rafa Benitez days.

Under Steve Bruce, United’s captain was hit-and-miss and so far this campaign has struggled immensely to hit form.

But his enforced one-match break out of the side appears to have done him the world of good as he returned with a solid defensive display against Burnley.

Was Federico Fernandez unlucky to miss out? Yes, but the decision to bring Lascelles straight back into the fold was the correct call.

He relished the physical battle with Chris Wood to organise and lead his teammates to a desperately-needed three points.

The former Nottingham Forest defender has been rightly criticised this term but he produced one of his best displays on Saturday.

Long may that continue. The club needs him.

Joelinton’s new chant

“He’s Brazilian... He only cost £40million. And we think he’s .......... brilliant, It’s JOELINTON.”

Finally, United’s record signing has his very own chant, and boy does he deserve it.

Joelinton is a man transformed under Howe. His goal against Brentford kickstarted things but his workrate in games versus Norwich and Burnley has been exceptional.

For the first time in his two-and-a-bit-year of his Newcastle career, the 25-year-old is seeing and hearing the appreciation of the fans.

From there, he will only grow because in Howe’s team, Joelinton is integral.

Howe said it before the game, the price-tag is irrelevant now. He’s giving his absolute all, so who can fault him?

‘Heeeeey Callum Wilson’

Newcastle are so blessed to have a natural goalscorer - and leader - like Callum Wilson in their ranks.

There’s an argument to say Wilson hasn’t been at his complete best under Howe but two goals in five days swiftly makes up for that.

From captaining the side in midweek, the 29-year-old showed the calmness and composure to fire his side ahead against the Clarets.

He could have easily snatched at the opportunity but he took the ball in his stride before firing home emphatically into the roof of the net.

Indeed, the on-watching Alan Shearer would have been proud. Shearer himself knows of Wilson’s importance.

Keep him fit and Newcastle have every chance. At least with Howe, we know he’ll be managed accordingly amid injury fears.
