Manchester United will reportedly consider bids in the region of £40million for Newcastle United transfer target Scott McTominay.

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe first identified the Scotland midfielder as a potential option in January but his enquiry was knocked back by the Red Devils.

That was despite McTominay dropping down the pecking order at Old Trafford last season following the summer arrivals Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

The 26-year-old started six of Erik ten Hag’s opening seven Premier League matches in charge but managed just four more between then and the end of the season.

He has, however, hit top form during Scotland’s perfect start to their European Championships Group A qualification campaign - netting five goals in four games.

McTominay has remained a player of interest to Newcastle but Man United’s £40m price tag, as reported by the Daily Mail, is likely to end any possible pursuit.

The Magpies are closing in on the £60m signing of Sandro Tonali from Serie A giants AC Milan.

After an agreement was reached on Thursday, United head of recruitment Steve Nickson flew to Romania, where Tonali is based with Italy for the under-21s European Championship, to finalise a deal.

The 23-year-old, capped 14 times at senior level, underwent his medical and agreed a six-year contract worth a reported £6.8m plus bonuses per-season.

Tonali is set to unveiled as a Newcastle player before the end of the week. He made 130 appearances for his boyhood club Milan and helped them lift their first Scudetto in 11 years in 2021-22.

It’s understood Howe will target another midfielder after Tonali. Newcastle retain their longstanding interest in James Maddison, while NewcastleWorld revealed last week further talks have taken place with RB Leipzig regardingDominik Szoboszlai.
