Marc Guehi contract admission will interest Newcastle United ahead of summer transfer window

Newcastle United retain an interest in Marc Guehi after trying to sign the Crystal Palace captain last summer.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner admits he doesn’t know if Marc Guehi will sign a new contract - as Newcastle United weigh up another move.

Guehi was the Magpies’ top target last summer but walked away from a deal in the remaining few days of the transfer window after Palace demanded over £70million, despite him having just two years left on his contract.

That leaves the South London club with a huge decision to make in the coming months. Guehi is out of contract in 12 months, meaning they risk losing him for free at the end of the 2025-26 campaign if they don’t cash in. As it stands, an agreement between Palace and the England international isn’t close.

Glasner said: “We haven’t just started talking about his contract. The talks were going on even before I arrived – for more than two years now. Marc is thinking what is best for his personal career and this is what we have to accept.

“I don’t know [if he will sign a new deal]. I don’t think about what happens in summer. On the 26th of May, I will turn my phone off for one or two weeks and then we will see what happens.

“Everybody knows he is a great footballer and great character. Let’s see what happens. But, of course, no manager would want to lose their captain. It will be Marc’s decision, but I know that he is so focused on improving his game and our game. It has no influence on his performances.”

What has Marc Guehi said about his future?

Guehi admitted last year to finding the speculation surrounding his future distracting.

“I’d say yes and no,” Guehi told Sky Sports. “Like you say, when you’re constantly reading things about yourself, it can be distracting for some people - but I am just glad I have a good support system around me.

“My family, the club, my friends, and I think it’s important having that humility to make sure you focus on the task in hand. Palace have given me every single thing in the world and I am completely grateful to them and now I just want to repay them by doing my absolute best.”

When asked about his future again last month, Guehi said: “My focus is on playing each game that I have for Palace and that's it really. I have played with some unbelievable players at this football club. That is saying something.

“Give credit to of course the players - we have some unbelievable players and squads - and the manager and the system and the way we play. We understand what we have to do, which makes a massive difference.”

Newcastle United in the market for a centre-back this summer

Newcastle retain a strong interest in Guehi as they target a new centre-back this summer. Although Fabian Schar signed a new one-year contract this week, club captain Jamaal Lascelles looks set to leave at the end of his contract in June, while Lloyd Kelly’s loan at Juventus will turn permanent for £20m.

As well as Guehi, who is also attracting interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, United have been linked with a move for Reds defender Jarell Quansah. That said, the prospect of a deal happening has been played down on Merseyside.
