Sander Berge has reportedly made a major decision over his future at Sheffield United - just over a week after Newcastle United showed an interest in the Norway international.

The surprise departure of long-serving midfielder Jonjo Shelvey in the final days of the January transfer window forced the Magpies into action as they looked for a replacement for the former Liverpool and Swansea City star.

There were widespread reports a move was made for Chelsea and England midfielder Conor Gallagher in the final hours of the window but those approaches were rebuffed by the Blues, who refused to do business with United as the two clubs battle for a place in Europe this season.

Berge was also said to be the subject of interest from the Magpies and there was speculation an offer was submitted to take the Norwegian on loan for the remainder of the season with a permanent move to Tyneside to follow in the summer.

Speaking about the potential loss of Berge, Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom said: “He’d be a big loss. We worked hard to get this squad together in terms of the balance and how competitive we’ve made it and that’s shown. The simple thing for me is to keep it together.

“Whatever happens between now and Tuesday, I’m prepared for. Then it’s about delivering it. This is what I think we’ve done well over the last 18 months. You can’t be scared by it or start sulking and moaning because you get these problems all the time.”

A deal failed to materialise, as did reported interest from Fulham, and Berge remained at Bramall Lane when the 11pm deadline passed last Tuesday night. The Sun have now reported the talented midfielder is keen to see out the final 18 months of his current Blades deal and depart the club on a free transfer at the end of next season.
