Eddie Howe admitted Anthony Gordon's return to Everton impacted his performance.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has admitted Anthony Gordon tried too hard to impress on his Everton return.

Gordon made his second visit to Goodison Park since joining the Magpies for £45million in January. He was a second-half substitute during the 4-1 win in April but started last night's fixture having starred this campaign.

However, the 22-year-old was unable to add to his six goals and three assists as the Toffees surged to a 3-0 victory in the remaining 20 minutes following goals from Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto.

Gordon missed two key chances in the second half, one where he robbed James Tarkowski of possession but aimed his shot straight at Jordan Pickford. And another where he skied an effort over after rushing his shot.

When it was suggested Gordon was trying too hard to impress, Howe replied: "Yeah, I think that's a fair reflection. Anthony coming back here is a huge moment for him. He had some really big moments in the game, especially in the second half.

"It certainly wasn't a lack of trying, it was probably the opposite but he's been magnificent for us in recent weeks. He's got a huge role to play for us."

Gordon received a frosty reception from the Goodison Park faithful. His name was loudly booed over the PA system and every time he got the ball. And by full-time, Everton fans taunted the winger with chants of "Gordon - what's the score?"
