Newcastle United are set to kick off their January recruitment plans by securing a deal for Australian wonderkid Garang Kuol.

The Central Coast Mariners forward has captured the attention of several clubs from around Europe after bursting on to the scene in the A-League over the last year.

Kuol’s first senior appearance for Australia was played out to a backdrop of speculation the Magpies had agreed a ‘deal in principle’ to hand him a chance to shine in the Premier League.

However, United are said to be considering an eye-catching move far closer to home.

Leicester City duo Youri Tielemans and James Maddison were both under consideration by the Magpies during the summer transfer window, with the latter believed to have been the subject of two unsuccessful bids during August.

The Foxes managed to hold on to both players but they have gone on to make an abysmal start to the new Premier League season and head into Monday’s home game with Nottingham Forest looking for their first win of the campaign.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with a move for Belgian star Tielemans, who could be available for a cut-price deal in the new year as he heads into the final months of his current deal at the King Power Stadium.

The situation surrounding Maddison is less clear, with the once-capped England international not out of contract until the summer of 2024.

90min have now reported Newcastle have the duo ‘in their sights’ as they look to take advantage of the Foxes struggles in the Premier League.

A fee of ‘less than £20m’ has been suggested for Tielemans, with Maddison likely to command well over double that amount, meaning United will have to splash the cash to add the midfield duo to Eddie Howe’s squad.
