Newcastle United are hoping to close out the January transfer window with a triple deadline day swoop.

The Magpies have added Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes to their playing squad - and are eyeing another three before the 11pm deadline.

There are also expected to be outgoings as Eddie Howe needs to make room in his 25-man Premier League squad.

Here’s Newcastle transfer state of play as we head into the final hours of deadline day:

Matt Targett

Newcastle have agreed to sign Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

Left-back is a position Howe has been keen to strengthen this month having recently tried to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker.

A deal for Bakker has been on-off twice, prompting United to turn their focus to former Southampton man Targett.

The 26-year-old was set to see his game time reduced following the arrival of Lucas Digne, a player also eyed by Newcastle, from Everton.

Targett has undergone his medical at the club’s Benton training base after Steven Gerrard sanction his temporary exit.

His arrival could see Jamal Lewis surprisingly depart on loan, as per reports elsewhere.

Dan Burn

United agreed a £13million fee with Brighton and Hove Albion for Dan Burn on Saturday night - but talks continued over personal terms.

The good news is Burn and Newcastle have finally reached an agreement, with the 29-year-old set to sign a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Burn was settled on the south coast having raised his young family in Brighton since 2018 - but the pull of his boyhood club has run true.

The arrival of Burn will signal an end to Newcastle’s lengthy search for a central defender after being frustrated in their efforts to sign Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

A transfer for the French wonderkid hangs in the balance with the 19-year-old unconvinced by a move to Newcastle.

United reignited talks with Reims on deadline day and were believed to have reached a £28m agreement.

However, Ekitike, who has drawn comparisons to Kylian Mbappe, has stalled on a decision with concerns over the club’s league position.

NewcastleWorld understands Ekitike’s Tyneside travel plans were cancelled this afternoon.

A deal now looks extremely unlikely, but there is still time for a change of heart. That said, it needs to be quick.

Jesse Lingard

United’s attention has now reverted back to Jesse Lingard - with the final decision now lying with Manchester United.

Ralf Rangnick, according to The Athletic, again this morning gave his blessing for the England midfielder to depart before the 11pm deadline.

So far, the Red Devils have priced Newcastle out of loan move but there is hope their demands can be lowered.

There is lots of talk surrounding a survival bonus, which Man United are demanding in the event Newcastle retain their top-flight status.

West Ham United also remain interested but that would mean offloading a player to a direct rival for Champions League football.

What about outgoings?

Should Newcastle seal the three signings they want, that will take their January signings count to six.

Ultimately, that means six members of Howe’s current squad will need to be left out of the 25-man squad.

Jeff Hendrick has been linked with a loan move to Middlesbrough, as has Ciaran Clark. Lewis, as previously, could reportedly leave on a temporary basis.

Elliot Anderson and Matty Longstaff are waiting on potential loan offers.
