Newcastle United will assess Bruno Guimaraes ahead of Saturday afternoon’s Premier League clash at Manchester City.

The Brazilian midfielder was immediately recalled to the Magpies’ starting XI for the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United after serving his three-match suspension. The Magpies lost 2-0 after goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.

Speaking after the game, Howe believes it is similar to the 25-year-old’s injury against Fulham last month. Guimaraes was withdrawn at half-time during the 1-0 win but made a quick recovery seven days later for the goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

“Bruno twisted his ankle,” said Howe. “I think he did similar [against Fulham]. He’s in a bit of pain but we don’t think it’s serious at the moment but let’s wait and see.

Guimaraes took to social media to provide his verdict on the defeat to Man United.

“That’s football,” he said. Not always giving our best is enough. Let’s keep walking our path in pursuit of Newcastle’s success. With delivery, dedication and love for the project and fans we represent. Healing our wounds and moving forward in search of the top. For NUFC. For the fans. I’m proud, but not happy. Because I’ll never accept the defeat.”
