Newcastle United's injury situation is on course to look a lot brighter come the end February.

Newcastle United pair Elliot Anderson and Matt Targett are closing in on a return to training.

The Magpies have been without Anderson for the last four months because of a back injury, while Targett hasn't played since the start of November after requiring surgery on his hamstring.

According to United head coach Eddie Howe, both players are "due to be training very soon, hopefully within the next 10 days."

As it stands, Newcastle have just three fit senior central midfielders in Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley but the imminent return of Joe Willock and then Anderson will significantly bolster that area.

Meanwhile, Targett's comeback comes at a time where Dan Burn has endured some criticism at left-back of late.

All going well then United will only have three players in the treatment room at the beginning of a March, which would be welcomed boost given the absentee list has hit double figures this campaign.

As well as Anderson, Targett and Willock, Alexander Isak is also nearing a comeback from a groin issue while Fabian Schar is expected to be in contention for Saturday's trip to Arsenal, despite leaving the St James' Park against AFC Bournemouth with his arm in a makeshift sling.

Nick Pope could return towards the end of March but both Callum Wilson and Joelinton are in a race to play again this term. Sandro Tonali, of course, is suspended from football until August 2024.
