Newcastle United will asses Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock ahead of this week’s Premier League double-header against Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth.

Eddie Howe made nine changes to his starting XI for Sunday’s 3-1 win over League Two side Bromley. Among those to come into the side was Harvey Barnes but the winger was forced to withdraw at half-time.

The scoreline was 1-1 at half-time after Lewis Miley cancelled out Cameron Congreve’s opener. As well Gordon, Howe introduced Bruno Guimaraes in place of Joelinton in what was a pre-planned substitute.

Gordon went on to equalise from the penalty spot before Will Osula’s first goal for the club made it 3-1 after 61 minutes.

Howe explained: “Bruno and Joelinton was planned, as much as you can because, of course, you can change your mind but that was what I wanted to do with those two. Harvey wasn't planned, he felt a muscle problem so we had to withdraw him and put Anthony on.”

Joe Willock was in line to feature in the matchday squad but wasn’t risked after complaining about a muscular problem in training on Saturday. Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Jacob Murphy were rested as planned.

Howe said: “Joe just felt something in training yesterday. I think it is a muscular problem, I don’t think it’s serious but it was enough for us not to take the risk with him. Similar with Alex, Sven and Jacob Murphy.

On Isak, Howe during his pre-match press conference: “We think he is pretty good. He’s seeing his physio at the moment, giving him a couple of days rest but we think he is in a good place. He’ll report back tomorrow [Saturday] and we’ll have a good look at him.

“We would have probably involved him in the game in some way but I think with what has happened, he’ll probably be given this game to rest and get himself right for the future schedule we have.”

Newcastle host Wolves at St James’ Park on Wednesday before Howe welcomes former club AFC Bournemouth three days later. The Magpies have won their last eight games in a row.
