Newcastle United have already lined up a midfield replacement after Jonjo Shelvey’s surprise exit

“We really believe in Elliot Anderson and this could be a moment in his career where we see the very best of him. A local lad who gets a chance in the team.”

Eddie Howe has tipped Elliot Anderson to step up after Jonjo Shelvey’s deadline day exit to Nottingham Forest left Newcastle United light of midfielders.

With Bruno Guimaraes - who is suspended for the next two games - Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton often talked up as the Magpies’ midfield options among supporters, Anderson has become a somewhat forgotten figure.

The Scotland under-21s was one of the bright sparks of United’s pre-season but a series of minor injuries have restricted the player from more first-team outings.

Anderson has made 13 appearances this term, and while he’s started cup games against Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday, the 20-year-old is still awaiting his first Premier League start.

That, however, is edging closer following a return to fitness and the closure of the January transfer window.

“I hope from the transfer window he feels closer to playing, because he certainly is,” Howe said. “I hope he feels the strength we have within him, we really believe in him.

“I think he’s got very good attributes but like all players, I think he’d need a run in the team to really show his qualities. But he can certainly play.”

The Whitley Bay-born midfielder played the remaining 10 minutes of the Magpies’ 1-1 draw against West Ham United on Saturday and made a positive impression.

Anderson is unlikely to start in the three-man midfield for the trip to Bournemouth on Saturday but should injuries occur before then, Howe would have no qualms about including him.

Howe said: “I think he’s ready to start from a physical perspective. He’s had a few niggles - calf problems, thigh problems but these were one or two day injuries that set back his rhythm of training so I don’t think he’s had a really fluid period.

“I think now in training we can see the very best of him again, similar to what we saw in pre-season.

“From a physical perspective, he’s looked stronger. Mentally Elliot is very strong as well, I think he’s very focused, very driven and wants to do extra every day to try and be the best player he can be. He’s in a place where he can start games but whether he will or not, that’s down to him.”

“He hasn’t knocked on my door but we do have regular meetings with him,” Howe added. “I think it’s important you communicate with your players and keep updated with his life really.

“He’s had a few physical problems which has knocked him around December and January - they were difficult months for him. But I think he’s through that now and looking a lot happier within himself. He’s working a different elements of his game to try and make himself better.”
