Newcastle United retain an interest in Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Here’s what our writer Jordan Cronin said about the Magpies’ interest in the Scotland international, who has been in the headlines this week for his braces against Cyprus and Spain.

‘It would be a good signing for Newcastle’

“There’s definite interest there from Newcastle. I believe in January there was a loan enquiry launched for Scott McTominay but that was turned down by Erik ten Hag. They did ask later in the transfer window as well when Jonjo Shevley was offloaded on deadline day but again, Manchester United said no.

“Newcastle do retain an interest. I’ve seen split opinions on social media but my own personal opinion is I think it would be a good signing for Newcastle. Looking at the current squad, is Scott McTominay an upgrade on what they’ve already got? I’d probably say yes.

“McTominany has come under the spotlight over the last few days after scoring a brace against Spain, and I think that shows, although people probably see him as a sitting midfielder i.e the Bruno [Guimaraes[ role, is probably a bit more than that.

“He can play the Sean Longstaff role where he plays on the right-hand side of the three-man midfield and provides lots of energy. Over the last few games for Scotland, we’ve seen McTominay is possibly better in a more attack-minded midfield position.

“At Manchester United, he hasn’t really played much this season but maybe after his brace for Scotland, then he may end up getting more of an opportunity during the remaining games of the season.

“Whatever happens with his game time will probably define what happens with him in the summer. If he continues to be left out the starting, I’d imagine McTominany for his own career would want to pursue a move elsewhere.

“Newcastle would be a good option, a club on the up and pushing for Europe and titles. We’ll have to wait and see what happens this summer. But as we stand here now, there’s definite interest there and I can see why Eddie Howe would be interested in McTominay.”
