Newcastle United are reportedly keen to add a right-sided centre-back to their squad during the summer transfer window - and a new name is said to be on their radar.

Fabian Schar has firmly secured his place alongside Sven Botman over the course of the season and the duo have formed a strong partnership that has helped the Magpies become the stingiest side in the Premier League, conceding just 18 goals in 25 league games.

That has cast a doubt over the future of club captain Jamaal Lascelles, who is believed to be on a list of players that could be allowed to depart St James Park at the end of the season, despite wanting to extend his nine-year stay on Tyneside.

Several options are believed to be under consideration to strengthen the defensive ranks in Eddie Howe’s squad and a recent report in the Turkish media has suggested Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson is high on United’s list of possible targets.

The 24-year-old Danish international has made 70 appearances for the Turkish giants ever since joining them in a £5m deal from FC Copenhagen during the summer of 2021. His form with club and country has attracted interest from several clubs around Europe but Turkish outlet Sabah has claimed Newcastle are prepare ‘the highest bid’ for the defender as they look to offer around £16m to tempt Galatasaray into selling him at the end of the season.

The 29-times capped England left-back has been without a club since he left Watford in September last year, despite being linked with a number of clubs at home and abroad. The 32-year-old spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan at St James Park but returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the campaign.
