Newcastle United are now officially safe from Premier League relegation, despite their heavy defeat on Sunday.

Though, both of those defeats have come against the top two, and Eddie Howe’s men won’t be getting too down, especially not after the improvements they have managed in the second half of the season.

New signings in January have certainly helped, and Newcastle will be keen to spend some of their new money to strengthen even further ahead of next season.

The Magpies can’t go all out, despite their new-found wealth, with Financial Fair Play limiting what they can do.

But significant new signings are expected, and Newcastle are hoping to be nowhere near the relegation battle next season.

And in that vein, we have rounded up all the latest transfer news concerning the Magpies:

Lingard talks

Newcastle are said to be one of the clubs interested in a move for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard.

Lingard is out of contract this summer, and it’s clear he will not be penning new deals at Old Trafford.

As the end of his contract nears, the midfield star, who impressed on loan at West Ham last season, is in talks with four clubs, according to the Daily Mail.

It’s reported that Newcastle are one of those clubs, as are PSG, but West Ham are not, at least as things stand.

Coutinho links

The Magpies are being backed to compete for the signing of Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho.

The midfielder has impressed on loan at Aston Villa this season, and the Midlands club do have an option to buy worth around £34million.

According to the latest reports, Villa are trying to reduce that figure, and that could serve up an opportunity for a hijack.

According to Dean Jones via GiveMeSport, Newcastle are tracking the situation and could move if Villa don’t take up their option to buy.

“Steven Gerrard still wants Villa to sign Coutinho, but Newcastle are watching this with interest,” said Jones.

“At the end of the month Villa have to tell Barcelona whether they intend to take up the option to buy him – and if they hesitate I’m told Newcastle will look to make a proposal to the player.”
