Newcastle United supporters' reaction to Matthias Jaissle decision speaks volumes during Everton defeat

Newcastle United supporters made their feelings to Matthias Jaissle heard during and after Thursday’s 3-1 defeat at Everton.

Newcastle United supporters were left sarcastically cheering a Matthias Jaissle decision before booing his side after the 3-1 defeat at Everton on Thursday night.

The Magpies crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the last-16 stage on Thursday night after finding themselves trailing 3-0 at Everton with goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry before Dan Burn’s late consolation.

With the score at 3-0, Jaissle introduced 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur for the final 10 minutes of the match. The change was met by loud cheers from the travelling supporters, some of whom had already headed for the exit at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Steur replaced Nico Gonzalez for only his second brief substitute cameo since shining the 2-1 win over Hull City last month with a performance Jaissle himself hailed as ‘exceptional’.

The Dutch midfielder’s limited minutes have been the subject of plenty of scrutiny from supporters while Jaissle has also faced questions about it from the media.

Arguably the biggest cheer of the night from the near 8,000 travelling supporters was not Burn’s late consolation but Steur’s introduction minutes earlier. Though, given the circumstances with the side trailing 3-0 and the game over, the cheers came with a strong helping of sarcasm.

Jaissle has explained that Steur’s lack of minutes recently has been down to Gonzalez’s return to the side.

After watching their side ship 11 goals in their last four away matches, some of the Newcastle fans remaining at the end of the match could be heard booing as their side exited the Carabao Cup before the quarter-final stage for the first time since 2021.

Next up for Newcastle is another match against Everton, this time in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Monday night.
