Newcastle United duo out v Everton plus two fitness doubts after training ground injury

Matthias Jaissle issued fitness updates Lewis Miley and Matias Fernandez-Pardo ahead of Newcastle United’s trip to Everton in the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle United remain uncertain over the availability of Lewis Miley and Matias Fernandez-Pardo for Thursday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Everton, with head coach Matthias Jaissle confirming both players are doubtful.

Neither midfielder featured in Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday. Miley is dealing with a glute injury, while Fernandez-Pardo has been struggling with illness in recent weeks.

Asked whether the pair could return for Newcastle’s trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Jaissle said: “These two players are still doubtful, there are question marks if they can make it, so we need to see step by step.

“There are still two days to decide if they're able to be in the squad or not, so with both of them we don't want to take any additional risk. Hopefully they're getting back soon.”

Newcastle face a quick turnaround as they prepare to meet Everton in the Carabao Cup last 16 on Thursday, before hosting David Moyes’ side in the Premier League at St James’ Park next Monday.

Newcastle United injury latest on Tino Livramento and Ewen Jaouen

Ewen Jaouen and Tino Livramento remain sidelined as they continue their respective recoveries from longer-term injuries.

Goalkeeper Jaouen suffered a serious hamstring injury during the previous international break and is expected to be out for at least two months.

Livramento, meanwhile, has missed Newcastle’s last four matches with a knee injury and was also forced to withdraw from England duty.

Jaissle was reluctant to put a firm timescale on the full-back’s return, but praised his attitude during rehabilitation.

“I don't want to be there too much in detail as I don't want to put too much pressure on him, first of all, but also not on the medical department, this is usually my approach when it comes to injuries.

“I can just assure you that I see him every day with great professionalism in the rehab, hard-working, so hopefully we have him back soon, and also hopefully that he's stable in his approach when he's joining us.”

Newcastle will assess Miley and Fernandez-Pardo over the coming days before deciding whether either can be involved against Everton. Jaissle’s priority is to ensure both players are ready to return without risking further setbacks.
