David Hopkinson drops social media hint as Newcastle United set to appoint new manager
Matthias Jaissle is on the brink of being appointed as Newcastle United’s new manager.
Eagle-eyed Newcastle United fans have noticed that CEO David Hopkinson is already following Matthias Jaissle on social media.
Tyneside faced the bombshell news this morning that Eddie Howe is set to step down as manager after four-and-a-half years. It is understood that the outgoing Toon boss has weighed up a decision on his future for several weeks.
Newcastle officials backed Howe following an underwhelming campaign - that resulted in a 12th-placed finish and two Tyne-Wear derby defeats. He appeared committed to continue but his mood shifted once pre-season preparations began.

As it stands, Newcastle are yet to make an official announcement. But in the worst-kept secret in football, the Magpies are set to appoint Al-Ahli manager Jaissle.
The final formalities are being agreed, with the German likely to travel to Spain as Newcastle face Valencia next week. Interestingly, supporters have noticed Hopkinson - the club’s chief executive - is already following Jaissle on Instagram.

Alan Shearer thanks Eddie Howe
Speaking to Betfair, Toon icon Shearer hailed Howe for delivering multiple Champions League qualifications and a Carabao Cup trophy. He said: “I'm very, very surprised with the news that Eddie Howe is leaving Newcastle. It's strange timing with three weeks to go until the new season kicks off.
“I don't know what's gone on, whether it was the end of last season, whether it was the summer, whether he feels they can't continue to sell his best players. I'm led to believe it was Eddie's decision to leave. What I would say is thank you. Thank you to Eddie for what he's given us.
“I mean, he gave me my best day as a Newcastle fan with that day at Wembley. He's given us some incredible nights in the Champions League that we'll never ever forget. He did a wonderful job for Newcastle, so it's a huge thank you to Eddie.”
‘Geordies will forever be grateful’ - Alan Shearer
Reflecting further on Howe’s reign as manager, Shearer added: “It's been an incredible ride. I think the job that he did was unbelievable from where he took us when he came, there was a real threat of relegation. He steadied the ship. He then got us climbing the league. He then brought in some wonderful players. He then took us to a final.
“We got beat in that final, but then took us back again and gave us the day that we've so craved for. I've been to Wembley as a player and lost. I've been to Wembley as a fan and lost. But I've also had the pleasure of going to Wembley and winning thanks to Eddie. Whatever happens now, the Geordies will always be grateful for what he gave us that day.”
