Newcastle United officially began their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw to National League side Gateshead.
Luke Supyk fired the hosts into an unlikely lead on 35 minutes. Throughout the contest, Newcastle dominated possession for large spells but struggled to find the killer touch in the final third.
Lewis Hall forced a Ben Willams own goal late on to spare United’s blushes - with Jacob Ramsey also denied a late clincher. A 7,000-strong crowd were treated to a first glimpse of new signings Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen. Here are your NewcastleWorld player ratings - with a trip to Bristol City next up on Wednesday.

5. Lewis Hall - 7
Showcased his on-field ability several times. Clearly a cut above this level as he shakes off his England snub. Created the own goal to pull Newcastle level. | Getty Images

6. Sean Steur - 7.5
Calm and composed in midfield playing in the deeper role. Dare it be said that there were shades of Bruno Guimaraes. Newcastle’s best player this afternoon and an exciting first impression. | Shields Gazette

7. Joe Willock - 5
A lot of energy in midfield but made little impact. There are whispers that he could leave St James' Park this summer. | Getty Images

8. Jacob Ramsey - 7
Penetrative in the No.10 position for the first 45 minutes. Gateshead players found it hard to get the ball off him. Had a quiet second half until picking out Hall for the equaliser. Should have scored immediately after. | Shields Gazette
