Newcastle United triple fitness concern as squad arrive for Gateshead friendly

Newcastle United supporters will get a first-hand look at two new signings as Eddie Howe’s men take on Gateshead.

Joelinton, Will Osula and Sven Botman will not feature for Newcastle United against Gateshead this afternoon.

Eddie Howe’s men cross the River Tyne to face the Heed in their first public pre-season friendly. Newcastle defeated Darlington 3-0 behind closed doors last weekend but Toon fans can get a close look at several new arrivals today.

Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen have arrived at the Gateshead International Stadium. However, there is no place for Bazoumana Toure, who was given an extended break after the World Cup.

Aladji Bamba also only became a Newcastle player yesterday so will not be thrown into the deep end versus the National League outfit. However, in a concerning injury update, Joelinton did not travel with the first-team squad.

The Brazilian missed the final two games of the 2025-26 campaign with a hamstring injury and is being nursed back to full fitness. Will Osula - the club’s new No.10 - has not made the trip.

Likewise, Sven Botman, who has struggled with fitness issues in recent seasons, is out. No player who featured at the World Cup - Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Elanga , Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw and Yoane Wissa - is in the squad.

On a positive note, Fabian Schar has travelled following his lengthy absence. A youthful Toon outfit sees the likes of Leo Shahar, Alex Murphy and Sean Neave given a chance to impress.
