Newcastle United officially began their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw to National League side Gateshead.
Luke Supyk fired the hosts into an unlikely lead on 35 minutes. Throughout the contest, Newcastle dominated possession for large spells but struggled to find the killer touch in the final third.
Lewis Hall forced a Ben Willams own goal late on to spare United’s blushes - with Jacob Ramsey also denied a late clincher. A 7,000-strong crowd were treated to a first glimpse of new signings Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen. Here are your NewcastleWorld player ratings - with a trip to Bristol City next up on Wednesday.

9. Jacob Murphy - 5
Wore the armband but was quite predictable on the right flank. Sported a new haircut, which was eventful as things got for him. | Shields Gazette

10. Harvey Barnes - 5
It was harder for Barnes to miss on the stroke of half-time. Expected more from the wideman today. Newcastle will need him to step up this season after selling Anthony Gordon. | Getty Images

11. Sean Neave - 5
Missed a few decent chances. Huffed and puffed up front as Newcastle were without the likes of Will Osula, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. Neave is hoping for a loan move this season. Hooked for the final 20 minutes. | Shields Gazette

12. Miodrag Pivas - 6
It is now or never time for Pivas at 21. Came on to give Schar a break in the closing stages. | Getty Images
