Not just Lewis Hall - Second Newcastle United star surprisingly named in England squad
Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento have been named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming international break.
Lewis Hall has bounced back from his World Cup heartbreak to earn a well-deserved call-up to the England squad.
The 22-year-old suffered a brutal setback earlier this year when Thomas Tuchel left him out of the World Cup squad. Many expected Hall to be a shoo-in at left-back due to his form for Newcastle United last season.
However, the Toon defender was forced to watch from afar as England reached the semi-final. Hall put the rejection behind him and has enjoyed a stellar start to the season under Matthias Jaissle.
Newcastle United duo called up
As reported by our sister title, The Gazette yesterday, Hall was in line for an international return. An announcement this morning confirmed he had made the squad for games with Spain, Croatia and two against the Czech Republic.
Hall will be hopeful of adding to his four senior caps - especially as Djed Spence is injured and Nico O’Reilly has struggled for fitness. Tino Livramento - recovered from his calf injury - has also returned to the setup.
Tuchel named him in his 26-man squad for the World Cup but he suffered a cruel setback on the eve of the tournament. There have also been recalls for Cole Palmer and Dominic Calvert-Lewin following his brace for Leeds United on Monday.
Mixed international fortunes
Elsewhere at Newcastle, new recruit Bazoumana Toure has been called up to the Ivory Coast setup. The youngster netted a consolation in the 4-1 defeat to Leeds.
However, there is no room for Anthony Elanga in the Sweden squad after his latest injury. Newcastle were dealt a blow when the in-form winger was ruled out for the trip to Elland Road.
Jaissle feared the worst when briefing reporters earlier this week - suggesting a long-term setback. On a positive note, Lukas Hornicek will also return to the international fold and could face Hall as England play the Czech Republic twice during the extended break.
Interestingly, new Germany boss Jurgen Klopp has named two separate squads for the four fixtures. Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade - on loan at Juventus - have received call-ups for the games against Serbia and Greece.
Lewis Hall on England snub
When asked how he dealt with the summer snub, Hall told the club website: “Do you know what? It was actually really good in the end. Obviously, it wasn't what I wanted to be. I went through a couple of weeks after finding out that I wasn't going to be at the World Cup… just processing it.
“I was obviously gutted and I found out that I wasn't going to be going. These things happen and I'm trying to use it now as extra motivation to get myself back in the squad for the next international break. I've just got to look forward to the Euros now in two years and do everything I can to be selected for that.”
