Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the frontrunners to sign Juventus defender Gleison Bremer.

The 26-year-old centre-back has enjoyed a promising first season with the Serie A giants after joining them from rivals Torino in a £35m deal last summer. Bremer has scored four goals and provided one assist in 38 appearances as Juve have challenged for a return to the Champions League and reached the semi-final of the Europa League.

His form led to a maiden call-up to the senior Brazil squad last year and the defender went on to earn a place in their squad for the World Cup Finals in Qatar. Speaking ahead of the tournament, then-Brazil manager Tite admitted he may have got it wrong in not calling up Bremer earlier in his career.

He said: “Bremer had this opportunity to be called up thanks to his career and performances of a high level at Torino and Juventus. Perhaps we got it wrong and didn’t observe him closely enough, because he deserved more of our attention a lot earlier. When he arrived here, in the games and the training sessions we did together, he gave such a sense of certainty. He really is a player of great quality.”

Since returning from the tournament after making two appearances in Qatar, Bremer has continued to impress for Juve although has remained as an unused substitute in their last two Serie A games. However, there are reports in Italy suggested the defender - who is part of the CAA Base agency that represents United star Kieran Trippier - could find his stay at Juventus limited to one season as Newcastle and Spurs show interest in handing him a first chance in the Premier League. Juve’s financial situation could play a part in any decision over Bremer’s future and the report suggests he could leave if the Serie A club can earn a profit on the deal that saw them sign the Brazilian just under 12 months ago.
