The summer transfer window is now open, and Newcastle United’s chiefs will already be hard at work.

The Magpies have plenty of work to do this summer as they look to improve their ranks to allow them to compete well in the Champions League. Eddie Howe should have a decent budget available, but FFP means the budget will be far from unlimited despite the wealth of Newcastle’s owners and increased spending over recent years.

As Newcastle weigh up their options, we have rounded up all the latest news surrounding St James’ Park.

Arthur chase

Newcastle are said to be interested in a move for Juventus star Arthur Melo this summer.

According to Tutto Juve, Juventus are looking to offload the midfielder after his failed loan spell with Liverpool last season. The Brazilian did not feature in the Premier League for the Reds. Arthur is likely to be available for an affordable fee, but he would arrive on the back of severely restricted play time over the last couple of years.

According to the report, Newcastle and Aston Villa are both showing interest ahead of this summer, while the player is said to be keen to return to the Premier League.

Maguire update

Manchester United are said to be willing to loan out Harry Maguire this summer, but Newcastle won’t be able to get involved in the deal.

That’s according to Dean Jones, who told Ranks FC: “United expected offers to start landing this week but they will not force him out of the club. There is too much respect for him.

“It is a bit of a problem though, he’s blocking them from signing a new defender. I’m told they will definitely consider loaning him out – as long as it isn’t to a rival. FYI Newcastle count as a rival these days.”
