Newcastle United star Sean Longstaff has called on Magpies supporters to 'smother' Paris Saint-Germain with the famous St James' Park atmosphere on Wednesday night.

The visit of the French champions is set to be a huge test for Eddie Howe's side but the Geordie midfielder thinks that the power of the home crowd cannot be underestimated and will throw the visitors.

A huge Wor Flags effort and more are set to electrify the stadium ahead of kick-off with Longstaff hoping for a re-creation of last season's Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton but 'on steroids'.

The 25-year-old told the Shields Gazette: "For a nighttime game, under the lights, it’s a special place. I can’t wait, it’s going to be like the semi-final last year but on steroids!

“Even walking around there, I was speaking to Barts, the goalie coach, and I just said: ‘This place is going to be absolutely bouncing.’ I can’t wait for it.

“It’s funny because if we go away and play in an atmosphere then it sometimes sends your mind everywhere when there is so much going on, and it can be tough. When teams come here I’d say it’s like that x10.

“Whatever we feel when we go away, I imagine other teams are feeling a lot worse when they come here. You feel smothered.

“Like you saw on Wednesday when we got after City and the crowd responded…it works both ways, if we feed them and they create an atmosphere, and we kick on again… When it’s bouncing there is nowhere better to play.”

Longstaff has regained his place in Eddie Howe's starting XI in recent weeks, adding a solidarity to midfield that had perhaps been lacking in the opening fixtures of the season.

The player also called on fans to not 'get too drunk' come Wednesday night for 'a night to remember' and to stop PSG seizing 'any tiny little thing to get behind' as the side's Champions League quest continues.
