Callum Wilson believes Eddie Howe “will be happy” to see the back of the January transfer window.

A low-key month for Newcastle United resulted in no incomings or outgoings at St James’ Park. That is despite clamour for new arrivals from supporters given the club’s injury crisis.

But financial constraints have forced the Magpies to keep their powder dry until the summer, with CEO Darren Eales admitting Newcastle are hamstrung by FFP/PSR. Howe confessed after beating Aston Villa on Tuesday that, if it were up to him, the window would already be closed.

Reports in recent weeks have linked Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Wilson with Tyneside exits. The latter has reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United and Chelsea due to their woes up front.

It was understood that Newcastle would consider offers of around £20million - the same fee they paid Bournemouth three years ago. However, the Toon number nine will stay put as he nears a return from injury.

Speaking to the Footballer’s Football podcast, Wilson suggested Howe can sleep happier now the transfer market is shut. He also highlighted how important it was for Newcastle not to lose anyone in the dying embers of the window.

“The transfer window closes tonight and I am sure the manager and the fans will be happy to see that door closed,” Wilson said. “We are keeping the squad together. There have been a lot of rumours about us not being able to add to the squad, which is common knowledge.

“For us as a team, it is important we hang on to everyone because we are all going to be needed from now until the end of the season.”
