There can be no doubt Newcastle United have been one of the stories of the Premier League season.

Just over 12 months ago, Eddie Howe’s side were putting the finishing touches to a campaign that had seemed like one long slog away from the relegation battle but ended in a wave of positivity as the former Bournemouth manager led United to the relative safety of mid-table.

Yet even with a positive atmosphere fuelled by the return of ambition and belief enveloping Tyneside as the new season got underway, few would have predicted the Magpies would be celebrating a top four finish and eagerly anticipating a return to the Champions League when the campaign came to a close.

Selecting United’s player of the season is a challenge in itself, with a whole host of Magpies stars going above and beyond to ensure the campaign will go down as one of the most memorable in the club’s recent history. There was summer signings Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak settling into life on Tyneside with ease and Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes building on the foundations of their impressive early months with the club.

Callum Wilson’s goals have been crucial in the push for a surprise top-four place and the continuous improvement of the likes of Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schar, Miguel Almiron, Joelinton and Joe Willock have ensured the hard work of Howe and his coaching staff has paid off in fine style. So it should be no surprise there are some United stars have been recognised by stats experts WhoScored as they put together a Premier League Team of the Season based on their average marks given out for performances throughout the campaign.
