The Premier League season is now all wrapped up, and that means we finally have conclusive statistics for the season.

It was quite the campaign for the Magpies, who secured a long-awaited return to the Champions League by achieving a top four finish. But while Eddie Howe’s men played some excellent football along the way, but they were accused of delving into the dark arts. Newcastle were regularly accused of wasting time, and it’s no secret they weren’t the cleanest of teams.

Newcaste were - and are - a powerful, physical side, and they overpowered a number of teams on their path to securing a top four finish, but there were some consecuences to that approach. One of Newcastle’s key stars is among the players to have picked up the most yellow cards in the Premier League.

Howe was actually asked about Joelinton’s habit for picking up yellow cards during the season. He said: “Look, we’re light in midfield, it is an area of concern for us so we’re desperately keen to keep him on the pitch without getting booked.

“He is competitive, he is a fighter and wants to win. That at times will spill over into yellow cards.”
