Newcastle United make return date decision as defender suffers knee injury in training

Tino Livramento last started a match for Newcastle United in April following three separate injuries.

Newcastle United won’t be rushing Tino Livramento back from his latest injury setback.

It’s now over six months since the 23-year-old last started a match for the Magpies following three separate injuries.

Livramento sat out the final five matches of last season but recovered in time to link up with England’s World Cup squad. However, his dreams were dashed when he sustained a calf injury in the week leading up to the tournament.

The full-back was forced to undergo surgery, missing the whole of pre-season and the opening three matches of the new campaign.

After marking his return with three substitute appearances, Livramento was in line to start the 2-1 win over Hull City last month following an injury to Amar Dedic. However, he too suffered a fresh injury on the eve of the game.

Newcastle United won’t rush Tino Livramento

The exact nature of Livramento’s latest injury had remained unclear until now, with Mail Sport reporting that he suffered a knee injury.

The former Chelsea defender spent a year on the sidelines with an ACL injury before completing his £32million move to Newcastle and endured two knee injury scares in the first half of last season.

Livramento has been back on the grass over the past week, doing some light work, but an exact return date has yet to be determined, with the Magpies proceeding with caution.

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle said last week: “With Tino, we need to be also cautious and paying attention that it's nothing where we hurry up, as you know about his injury situation and history in the past.

“But we are optimistic that also in the next weeks we will bring him back, but slowly and step by step.”

Jaissle’s side face Crystal Palace, Everton twice – in the Carabao Cup and Premier League, respectively – and Fulham before the November international break.

With just over two weeks to go until then, Newcastle may wait until their Premier League clash against Arsenal on November 21 before reintroducing Livramento to the matchday squad.
