January transfer window truth after Newcastle United bank £245m - can they spend?

Newcastle United fetched £245million in player sales during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United have headroom to improve the squad in the January transfer window if necessary.

Toon chiefs spent £260million on new arrivals over the summer as part of a new-look rebuild. However, a major caveat is that Newcastle only forked out around £20million net due to several high-profile exits.

Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes fetched huge fees - leaving the Magpies with voids to fill all over the park. Young additions like Ewen Jaouen, Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Toure accounted for almost £100million and have seen little game time so far.

A bright start to the campaign has quickly turned to concern after consecutive defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa. Many fans have questioned whether Matthias Jaissle was left short in the summer window.

January transfer window truth

The Daily Mail report that Newcastle have funds to spend this winter. However, the Magpies will not hit the panic button and view their summer recruitment as the foundation for the season.

It has been suggested that Newcastle could hunt for a defensive-minded midfielder or a No.10 to help Jaissle mould the team into his Red Bull image. The Magpies do not have a recognised attacking midfielder, with Joe Willock and Yoane Wissa deputising in recent times.

Toon chiefs are set to ramp up their scouting efforts in the upcoming weeks and months. When asked by NewcastleWorld last week, Jaissle claimed he would ask for reinforcements in January.

What Matthias Jaissle said about January

“I think this (banging down the door) is the approach from every coach,” Jaissle said. “First of all, we trust our squad, the current squad we have here.

“But there is always space and needs, usually also to improve, to bring players in where it's needed. Until January, that's still a long time. Many things can happen performance-wise, injury-wise, so you need to work on options throughout the whole year.

“But now it's also time to work with the group in the best possible way. I mention that also so, so often, that I'm really pleased and happy with that group. A young group, but really willing to learn and to improve.”
