Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s next destination is likely Newcastle United following his Roma dismissal.

That is according to bookmakers, who price the legendary Portuguese coach at 3/1 to succeed Eddie Howe on Tyneside. Roma pulled the trigger on Mourinho following their 2-1 defeat to AC Milan at the weekend.

The loss leaves them ninth in Serie A despite hoping for a Champions League push at the start of the campaign. A romantic adventure at Newcastle could be on the cards if the bookies are to be believed.

Mourinho admitted in 2020 that he is a “little Magpie” due to his connections with Toon great Sir Bobby Robson. The ex-Chelsea boss began in football as a translator for Robson at Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona before forging his own path.

Newcastle chiefs remain firmly behind Howe after a run of four straight Premier League defeats. A less-congested fixture list from now until May gives the boardroom hope - with CEO Darren Eales sharing his optimism last week.

Another plausible option would be for the 60-year-old to join the Saudi Pro League. Heads in the Middle East have likely turned once Mourinho’s sacking was announced as they aim to lure high-profile names to the region.

He is valued at 4/1 to join any Saudi club but talk remains about him finally taking the international plunge. Roberto Martinez only took charge of Portugal last year but a poor Euro 2024 could result in Mourinho (5/1), who revealed he was offered the job after the World Cup, being appointed.
