Matthias Jaissle on Sean Steur - Newcastle United supporters will not like this
Sean Steur did not play a single minute in Newcastle United’s defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa.
Matthias Jaissle has suggested Sean Steur and Nico Gonzalez will not operate in the same Newcastle United team.
As it stands, the duo are yet to play in the same midfield since arriving on Tyneside over the summer. Steur was arguably Newcastle’s best player in the 2-1 victory over Hull City last month.
The Magpies have not won a game since - losing to Coventry City and Aston Villa following the international break. However, despite many fans calling for Steur to play alongside Gonzalez, Jaissle hinted that the two are competing for the same role.
Matthias Jaissle on Sean Steur
“First of all, we're all sure, the whole club, the whole coaching staff, and I think also the players, of what great potential Sean has,” Jaissle said. “He showed that already. He showed also, like many other lads, that there are ups and downs already here in the season.
“But this is normal and something we were aware of beforehand. Now it's time for him to get that confidence and maturity, as a player who didn't have that experience in the Premier League, through the training sessions and training weeks.
“We see that for sure as a long-term project. Nico was doing a good job in his position, so that's competition. But he's waving his hands and putting his finger up in training, so we're happy with his progress and he should just keep going like this.”
Newcastle United target three points
Jaissle is also happy with how Newcastle trained as he targets three points at Selhurst Park. He added: “It was a week where we were fully committed to the things we wanted to develop. I think we mentioned also our potential.
“We managed the things where we can clearly do better in the post-match analysis, and from there we took the steps to work on these themes. Now it's, of course, time to just focus on the next match.
“Against Crystal Palace, we want to show another face, another performance, to be able to get a great result, and that means three points.”
